City Hunter Synopsis / Plot
City Hunter is a 2024 Japanese movie that was filmed in the neon-soaked streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo.
Ryo Saeba is a charismatic but goofy private investigator who plies his trade under the moniker “Sweeper.” A crack shot with a penchant for beautiful women, Ryo tackles any job that comes across his message board, signed simply with “XYZ.”
The movie opens with a seemingly straightforward case. A desperate plea—”XYZ, please find my sister“—leads Ryo and his longtime partner, Hideyuki Makimura, on the trail of Kurumi, a popular cosplayer who’s vanished without a trace. But beneath the surface of this seemingly simple missing person case lies a tangled web of deceit.
A tragedy strikes when Hideyuki is murdered during the investigation. Grief-stricken and fueled by a burning desire for justice, Ryo finds himself reluctantly partnering with Kaori Makimura, Hideyuki’s fiery younger sister.
Kaori is a skilled computer whiz with a rebellious streak; she injects a new dynamic into the City Hunter duo.
Their contrasting personalities—Ryo’s laid-back swagger clashing with Kaori’s fierce determination—provide both comedic tension and a refreshing twist on the classic partnership.
As they dive deeper into the mystery surrounding Hideyuki’s death, Ryo and Kaori discover their missing cosplayer is more than just a pretty face.
Kurumi’s online fame has inadvertently put her in the crosshairs of a powerful criminal organization with far-reaching influence.
The deeper they dig, the more they uncover a web of corruption that extends into the highest echelons of power.
