___Entertaining adaptation of the stage musical
Blitz Bazawule’s entertaining if uneven adaptation of the Broadway musical version of Alice Walker’s novel – by way of Steven Spielberg’s stodgy earlier film (he exec Produces).
The cast is well chosen, particularly its leads – Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo and Fantasia Barrino as Celie who bring a verisimilitude to it. As fine as the cast in Spielberg’s edition was, that film never felt authentic.
Marcus Gardley’s screenplay does a decent job condensing the long timeline, but it’s still a bit choppy. The saving graces are the exuberant performances and the music and staging. The emotional beats mostly connect and it has a lovely ending. – Gortx
