The Plot
No Hard Feelings is a comedy film that was shot in the picturesque beach town of Montauk, New York.
Maddie Barker (Jennifer Lawrence) is a working-class woman struggling to keep afloat. With her beloved mother recently deceased, Maddie inherits the family home, but the rising cost of living, fueled by an influx of wealthy vacationers, threatens to snatch it away.
Her Uber driving gig barely covers the bills, and the repossession of her car adds to the mounting pressure.
Desperate to save her home, Maddie stumbles upon a peculiar Craigslist ad. A seemingly well-off couple, Darryl (Matthew Broderick) and Leann Phillips (Laura Benanti), are seeking someone for a unique summer job.
Their socially awkward son, Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), is about to embark on his freshman year at Princeton.
The Phillipses are looking for someone to “help Percy blossom”—in other words, get him out of his comfort zone and lose his virginity before college. Percy is completely unaware of his parents’ meddling.
Intrigued by the offer of a free car (a vintage Buick Regal) and a chance to stay afloat financially, Maddie takes on the challenge.
What unfolds is a hilarious cultural clash between the quick-witted, street-smart Maddie and the sheltered, bookish Percy.
Their initial attempts at “loosening Percy up” are a disaster zone.
Maddie’s initial plan was a simple cash grab, but Percy’s genuine kindness and vulnerability slowly began to chip away at her cynical exterior.
They bond over shared dreams and anxieties, revealing a depth neither expected. Percy starts to come on his own, finding his voice and experiencing life outside his bubble.
Meanwhile, Maddie grapples with her grief and the uncertainties of her future.
As the summer progresses, the line between their professional arrangement and genuine connection starts to blur.
However, the ever-present threat of foreclosure looms large, and Maddie’s ex-boyfriend, the disgruntled tow truck driver Gary (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), adds a layer of comedic tension.
The Phillipses’ motives come under scrutiny, and the question of whether their intentions were truly benign adds another twist to the plot.
